Peoples Democratic Party’s stakeholders in Kwara State on Sunday assured President Goodluck Jonathan of his safety ahead of the presidential campaign holding in Ilorin, the state capital on Monday.
The assurance was against the background of last week’s attack on the President’s convoy during his campaign visits to Katsina and Bauchi States.
There are fears that the trend may continue in other Northern states.
Those who promised a hitch-free presidential rally in Ilorin included the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Senator Simeon Ajibola; the Minister of National Planning, Dr. Suleman Abubakar; and the state chairman of the PDP, Chief Iyiola Oyedepo.
They spoke in separate interviews with our correspondent at the venue of the rally while assessing the level of preparation for the event.
Abubakar said despite what happened in Katsina and Bauchi, Nigerians should expect a peaceful rally in Ilorin.
He said although indigenes of the state could have their differences in the area of party affiliations, they are largely peace-loving people.
He said, “We believe in this state that we are one family. We also believe that our President is not a President of one political party, he is the President of Nigeria.
“As such, we give him that respect. I am sure that members of APC in Kwara State are not unaware of the fact that Mr. President is the President of all.
